At least 10 people died when two trains collided Wednesday morning in central Spain, according to Spain's state-owned news agency and other local media. Spain's rail system operator ADIF said the crash happened in the province of Toledo. Rail service is suspended between Madrid, Ciudad Real and Andalusia.

State broadcaster TVE reported the accident involved two high-speed trains traveling in the same direction. One train struck the rear of the other, knocking two cars off the track. Civil protection authorities asked the town hall in nearby Urda to prepare a sports pavilion to attend to passengers, according to Mayor Manuel Galán, who also told TVE that passengers had been injured. Jesús Pérez, mayor of the nearby village Los Yébenes, told TVE the accident appeared to be "serious." Emiliano García-Page, regional president of Castilla La Mancha, wrote on X that he is headed to the crash site.

In January, 45 people died in southern Spain when a train left the track and struck an oncoming train. That January incident was the deadliest in Spain since a 2013 crash that killed 80 people.

ADIF has suspended rail service on the Madrid, Ciudad Real and Andalusia route while the response at the Toledo province site continues.
