Apple has deployed a hidden interactive element on its Apple Music website to mark the 25th anniversary of the original iPod. The feature appears on error pages, presenting users with a fully functional virtual version of the classic hardware.
When a visitor lands on a broken page, a prompt below the standard error message reads, "give this a spin instead." Following the link reveals a clickable interface that mimics the physical device. The virtual player contains a library of 1,029 playable tracks, slightly exceeding the famous "1,000 songs in your pocket" marketing claim from the original launch.
The interface replicates the familiar menu structure with sections for Playlists, Artists, Songs, and Settings. The click wheel and other controls respond to user input, though testing indicated the experience is somewhat buggy. Desktop users reported difficulty getting the feature to load, while mobile devices provided a smoother experience due to touch controls.
The music selection leans heavily toward the early 2000s. Tracks by Baha Men, blink-182, and Eminem are available to stream. UK-based testers also identified songs by Daniel Bedingfield, The Fratellis, and Klaxons, though it is unclear if the catalog differs for US users. Each track is limited to a 90-second playback window.
The virtual device also includes a hidden bonus game called Brick. This Breakout-style title was a genuine extra on the first-generation iPod. Users can access it by holding the center button on the About screen for several seconds, replicating the original activation method.
The feature does not appear to require an active Apple Music subscription. The addition serves as a digital Easter egg for a product widely considered one of Apple's most impactful releases in consumer technology history.
