Apple has released its first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, but the device requires separate purchases to unlock its primary hardware capabilities.
The phone ships with a USB-C cable but lacks a power adapter, meaning buyers must purchase a charger to access fast charging speeds. Apple states the Duo reaches 50 percent battery in roughly 20 minutes, a performance level that depends on a suitable power source. The base device does not include the stylus needed for handwriting on the dual displays. Apple Pencil support arrives via the iOS 27.2 update next week and is compatible only with the USB-C model. The device is currently listed at $69, a reduction from its original $79 price tag.
Retailers and accessory makers have already priced out the necessary add-ons. Apple sells a 40W Dynamic Power Adapter capable of 60W output for $34, down from $39. Third-party options include an Anker 100W USB-C charger with a five-foot cable for $29. The ESR MagSafe Car Mount, which attaches to an air vent, is available for $19, reduced from $29. Case options range from the $29 SPIDERCASE Magnetic Case with a built-in stand to Apple’s $129 Folio with Kickstand. The standard Apple case costs $79.
The device also modifies the StandBy mode, allowing smart home controls to appear on the screen even when the phone is not charging. This feature integrates with HomeKit accessories, including security cameras. Recommended models include the Aqara G100 2K camera at $39 and a eufy 4K camera at $69. These additions allow users to monitor home security feeds directly on the phone's display.
The cost of these specific components varies by consumer choice. A buyer selecting the discounted Apple Pencil and the Apple 40W adapter spends $103 on the two items essential for stylus input and fast charging. Adding the ESR car mount brings the total for these three specific accessories to $122. Those opting for the higher-end eufy camera and the Apple Folio case would face higher initial outlays, with the camera alone costing $69. The AirPods Pro 3 are also available on sale at Amazon for $199, down from $249, though they are not exclusive to the Duo.
The iPhone Duo targets users who prioritize on-screen input and rapid power restoration. The hardware design relies on external peripherals to deliver the full user experience promised in marketing. The pricing structure separates the core device from the tools required to use its unique features.
