Bulldozers began flattening homes in a Hebron neighborhood on Friday afternoon, initiating a forced evacuation of hundreds of Palestinians. Israeli military officials stated that soldiers were positioned behind concrete barriers when two gunmen opened fire at a nearby checkpoint. The ensuing firefight lasted approximately 20 minutes before troops killed the attackers. Two Israeli soldiers died in the exchange, and three others sustained injuries.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced a military operation in the West Bank during a televised address from the attack site. He described the planned action as being on a scale not seen since the Six-Day War, a conflict that resulted in Israel's initial occupation of the territory nearly six decades ago. Netanyahu declared the intent to demolish the area and change it completely. He compared the upcoming operation to last year's assault on two Palestinian refugee camps in the northern West Bank, which displaced tens of thousands of residents.

Human Rights Watch previously labeled those northern expulsions as war crimes, a charge Israel continues to reject. B'Tselem, an Israeli human rights group, has urged foreign governments to intervene to prevent another wave of ethnic cleansing and war crimes. The United Nations Human Rights Office for the occupied Palestinian territory has described the current situation as a new level of dehumanization of Palestinians. Israel has imposed widespread closures in Hebron, the most populous city in the occupied West Bank, complicating movement in and around the area.

The Israeli military maintains control of the territory through approximately 925 checkpoints, roadblocks, earth mounds, and other barriers. These restrictions are part of a broader surge in violence and land seizures by Israeli settlers against Palestinians. The timing of the military response coincides with national elections scheduled for October 27. Current polls indicate that Netanyahu and his main rival, Gadi Eisenkot, are running neck and neck, with neither candidate currently holding enough support to form a government.

Danny Citrinowicz, a senior researcher at the Institute for National Security Studies in Tel Aviv, stated that Netanyahu is positioning himself as the primary security figure ahead of the vote. Citrinowicz noted that the prime minister is likely to take harsh measures to demonstrate his role as protector of the state. He described the eviction of families from the attackers' neighborhood as collective punishment, especially given the lack of evidence linking them to the gunmen.

Citrinowicz argued that preventing future attacks requires giving hope rather than relying on collective punishment. He suggested that authorities should focus on arresting those planning attacks while helping residents who seek stability and a functioning economy. Other analysts share the view that the operation is primarily an effort to maintain political power rather than a long-term security strategy.
