Patrick Stewart, the actor who portrayed Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men franchise for more than 25 years, died on Wednesday at age 86. His final on-screen appearance is scheduled to premiere on December 18 in Avengers: Doomsday. The role marks the conclusion of his nine-film tenure with the character.
Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, confirmed the news and offered a personal tribute to the late actor. Feige recalled first seeing Stewart on the set of the original 2000 X-Men film. He described Stewart as brilliant, charming, and warm, noting that the actor possessed a quiet strength and gravitas that went beyond his screen persona. Feige also cited Stewart's sharp sense of humor and the many people he mentored throughout his career.
Marvel Studios released an official statement praising Stewart for bringing the character of Charles Xavier to life with grace and intelligence. The studio described him as a singular talent and a generous collaborator. The statement extended condolences to his wife Sunny, his children, and his friends. It noted that Stewart defined the character for generations of fans through his work.
Directors and cast members across Stewart's filmography paid tribute to his legacy. James Mangold, who directed Logan, called Stewart a brilliant and tireless actor and a gentle soul. Anthony and Joe Russo, the directors of Avengers: Doomsday, described Stewart as one of their childhood heroes. They thanked him for teaching them humanity both on and off the screen. Stewart’s career in science fiction extends beyond the X-Men franchise. He originated the character of Captain Jean-Luc Picard in 1987 and played the role on and off until 2023. Tributes have also poured in from his Star Trek colleagues. George Takei, Wil Wheaton, and Jonathan Frakes shared their condolences. Alex Kurtzman and Akiva Goldsman, co-creators of Star Trek: Picard, also paid homage to Stewart. William Shatner, who played the original USS Enterprise captain, joined the wave of tributes from the franchise.
With Avengers: Doomsday scheduled for a global release, the film is expected to take on a reverential tone for audiences. The movie will serve as the final chapter for Stewart's character, closing a long association with the X-Men brand. The production team and fanbase are preparing for a release that honors his final performance. The film's marketing will likely reflect the weight of Stewart's departure from the screen.
