A federal magistrate judge in California ordered President Donald Trump to sit for a deposition in his $10 billion defamation lawsuit against the BBC. The ruling states that Trump must comply with court rules or face sanctions. This legal development arrived on the same day that U.S. military logistics in the Middle East and domestic voting data showed notable shifts.
Military sources indicate that American and Israeli planners are preparing for a possible strike on Iran following the November 3 midterm elections. A person briefed on the planning told NPR that the goal is to avoid oil price spikes before voters head to the polls. The United States is dispatching a third aircraft carrier to the region. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth recently visited Israel to meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that Tehran is prepared for both diplomacy and war. He noted that Iran demands formal control of the Strait of Hormuz and the withdrawal of U.S. troops from the area. While the U.S. and Israel possess the capacity for heavy damage, Iran shows no signs of making major concessions. Some U.S. personnel are currently leaving the region as reinforcements arrive.
In the BBC case, the network is seeking to understand Trump’s state of mind during his January 6, 2024, speech. BBC attorneys argue that more than 200 defendants in Jan. 6 cases said the speech motivated them. The suit centers on a Panorama broadcast that allegedly edited the speech to suggest Trump incited a violent siege of Congress. Trump has called the broadcast false, misleading, and defamatory under Florida law. He previously canceled a deposition citing matters of national importance and proposed January instead.
Early voting for the midterms is well ahead of schedule. The University of Florida's Election Lab reports that nearly 21 million Americans have cast ballots by mail or in person. This total rose by about 2 million in a single day. Early voting in key battleground states is significantly higher than during the last midterm cycle. Democrats are voting early at higher rates than Republicans, a pattern consistent with past elections.
Grocery prices remain a focal point for consumers. Ground beef reached $6.79 per pound last month, an 85% increase over the past decade. Eggs dropped to $2.27 per dozen after peaking at $6.23 in March 2025. Butter averaged $3.96 in September, down 17.3% from the previous year due to oversupply. Coffee prices are still 44% higher than two years ago despite the removal of tariffs. Higher labor costs, tariffs, and energy prices linked to the Iran conflict are driving the overall rise.
A separate federal judge in California is restricting pre-election field operations by the Department of Homeland Security. The department said its efforts aim to identify noncitizens who allegedly voted illegally in nine states. These legal and economic developments occur as the administration balances military posture with economic stability ahead of the election.
