The 2026 midterm elections are approaching with the U.S. Senate still undecided, creating a volatile backdrop for major political figures to voice their concerns about the future of the party system.

Elon Musk warned on X on October 30, 2026, that a Democratic victory in the 2028 presidential election and control of both chambers of Congress would signal the end of democracy in any meaningful sense.

The Tesla and SpaceX CEO identified three specific actions he believes Democrats would take if they achieve a clean sweep in 2028. These include granting statehood to Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico, which would secure a strong Senate majority for the party.

Musk also predicted that Democrats would legalize immigrants currently living in the country illegally to cement a lasting electoral advantage. Furthermore, he warned they would expand the number of Supreme Court justices to secure an immediate majority on the nation's highest court.

According to Musk, these moves would result in a permanent one-party state. He stated that Republicans must hold at least 51 Senate seats after the 2028 elections to prevent these outcomes, making the current midterm race urgent.

Musk directed voters to support Republican senators in the upcoming election, noting that other reasons are irrelevant compared to preserving the balance of power. He contributed $276 million to Republican super PACs and organizations over the previous three months.

This funding included $158 million to the Senate Leadership Fund, a group aligned with Senate Majority Leader John Thune, and $10 million to Lone Star Liberty PAC, which backs Texas Senate candidate Ken Paxton. Hillary Clinton responded to the spending by accusing Musk of flooding the midterms with money to help President Trump, though she suggested his millions might not counteract reality.
