OpenAI is in the process of securing a new round of private investment that could reach $30 billion. This move comes as the company weighs its next steps regarding a public stock offering. If successful, the round would value the company at $1.25 trillion on a pre-money basis.
Sources tell CNBC that the new capital is expected to be led by Coatue Management. The funding is also anticipated to include significant participation from investors based in the United Arab Emirates. The deal structure may include an agreement for OpenAI to secure additional computing capacity from the region.
This development follows a report from Bloomberg earlier this year. That report suggested OpenAI was targeting a similar $30 billion raise, though at a slightly higher valuation of $1.4 trillion. Because terms are still under negotiation, the final numbers could shift before the deal is finalized. OpenAI has declined to comment on the current discussions.
If the $1.25 trillion valuation holds, OpenAI would become the most valuable private company in history. This record-breaking status would set a high benchmark for the company’s upcoming initial public offering. The company has already taken preliminary steps toward going public by filing confidential paperwork in June.
The last major funding round for OpenAI took place in March. At that time, the maker of ChatGPT was valued at $852 billion on a post-money basis. The new round would represent a substantial jump in value, signaling continued strong investor confidence in the artificial intelligence sector.
The high valuation for OpenAI also creates context for its main rival, Anthropic. Many industry observers believe Anthropic is closer to launching its own public offering. Rumors indicate that the company could file its public S-1 document at any moment.
CNBC reports that Anthropic is seeking a valuation between $1.5 and $2 trillion for its public debut. This range places the company in a competitive position against OpenAI. The two firms are currently vying for the top spot in the private artificial intelligence market.
Anthropic raised $65 billion in May at a valuation of $965 billion. At the time, many believed this would be the company’s last large private round before an IPO. Like OpenAI, Anthropic also filed confidential paperwork in June to prepare for a potential listing on the stock market.
The race between these two companies highlights the intense capital requirements in the AI industry. Both firms are leveraging private markets to fund their rapid growth and infrastructure needs. The outcome of these funding negotiations will shape the future of the public markets as well.
