The Dallas Stars trailed by two goals late in regulation on Thursday night before Miro Heiskanen's final pass broke the tie and secured a 3-2 overtime victory over the Winnipeg Jets at American Airlines Center.
The decisive sequence began after Jason Robertson blocked a shot from Winnipeg. Heiskanen immediately sent the puck down the ice to Roope Hintz. Hintz carried the puck to the goal and scored the winner at 3:47 of the extra period. The play converted a defensive stop into an attack, ending the game.
Dallas was not always in control of the scoreboard. Tyler Johnston scored early in the second period to give the Stars a 1-0 lead. Gabriel Vilardi and Kyle Connor then scored to put Winnipeg ahead. The Stars remained behind until Hintz scored a six-on-five power-play goal with two minutes left in regulation to make the score 2-2.
The Stars relied heavily on their top pair of defensemen. Esa Lindell was scratched for the game. Heiskanen played 29 minutes and 20 seconds. Thomas Harley logged 28 minutes and 27 seconds. The next Dallas defenseman in minutes was Lian Bichsel at 17 minutes and 47 seconds. Nils Lundkvist, Tyler Myers, and Kyle Capobianco also appeared on the ice.
Dallas shot the puck 38 times against Winnipeg's 19. Winnipeg goaltender Connor Skinner made 35 saves. Heiskanen finished the game with five shots on goal, one blocked shot, and the winning assist. Harley did not score a goal. The Stars won the game with a single goal in overtime.
The team has not announced a return date for Lindell or a permanent change to the defensive rotation. Heiskanen and Harley played the most minutes among Dallas defenders on Thursday night. The Stars moved on from their first two-goal deficit to win the game.
