The Washington Commanders are altering their sideline setup for Sunday Night Football against the Philadelphia Eagles. The team brought in Steve Wilks, a former head coach of the Arizona Cardinals and interim head coach of the Carolina Panthers, to assist with defensive game planning. Wilks, who most recently served as the defensive coordinator for the New York Jets, will wear a headset and roam the sidelines for the game. Head coach Dan Quinn stated that Wilks will not be present at every game, describing the move as simply adding another set of eyes.

Quinn noted that he and defensive coordinator Daronte Jones had discussed bringing Wilks in during training camp but delayed the decision until two weeks ago. Wilks maintains other commitments, including helping with the Appalachian State football program. Quinn emphasized that the addition is not a major overhaul, saying it makes sense to have Wilks involved in the early parts of the week for coaching purposes.

The Commanders, currently at 1-4-1, have also made personnel adjustments on the field. The team placed wide receiver Terry McLaurin on injured reserve on Wednesday, ending his season. McLaurin, 31, tore his patellar tendon during the Week 6 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. He recorded 15 catches for 230 yards and one touchdown in five games this season.

With McLaurin out, Quinn indicated that the team will look to increase touches for rookie Antonio Williams. Quinn described this as a natural progression, noting that Williams will likely see higher volume but will not necessarily occupy the same role as McLaurin. The team also activated veteran Van Jefferson off the practice squad. Additionally, wide receiver Stefon Diggs is tapering his practice reps to stay healthy, meaning he will not practice on Wednesdays for the remainder of the season.

The Commanders face a Philadelphia team that is 2-5 and has lost five consecutive games. The Eagles will play without quarterback Jalen Hurts for the rest of the season due to injury. Philadelphia’s injury list remains long, and fans have already called for head coach Nick Sirianni to be replaced. The Eagles have one win in the NFC East this year, which came against Washington in Week 1.

Washington is currently winless in its division. The Eagles are considered the Commanders' best opportunity to secure a divisional victory this year. Quinn has resisted calls for his own dismissal partly because the team remains in the divisional race. If Washington cannot win this matchup, questions about Quinn's job security are likely to intensify.
