Google has long maintained a policy of not using data from services like Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos for personalized advertising. A recent update to its privacy policy, however, changes that promise for users who opt into certain AI-powered features, signaling a significant shift in how the company handles user data.

The policy change, which took effect on October 16, 2026, modifies the company's longstanding commitment by adding a specific exception. The new terms state that data from these services will not be used for personalized ads "unless you choose to make data from these services available to other Google services that support personalized ads." This change directly links the use of AI personalization features to the potential for targeted advertising.

This means that individuals who have connected their Gmail, Drive, or Google Photos to personalized AI features, such as those used by Search and other tools, could now see advertisements tailored based on the content of those accounts. For instance, enabling a feature that provides better recommendations based on your personal information could also mean that your activity is used to serve you ads. The policy explicitly notes that Search may process data you allow it to access to personalize content, including ads.

While this opens up personal data for ad targeting, there are limits in place. According to the policy, advertisers themselves do not receive direct access to your Gmail, Drive, or Photos content, nor do they receive personally identifying details like your name or email address. Furthermore, Google states it will not target ads based on sensitive categories such as race, sexual orientation, religion, or health.

This update reflects the growing integration of AI services into the company's core products and the associated business implications. By tying data sharing to personalized experiences, Google is creating a direct pathway for user information from personal accounts to be used in its advertising ecosystem, a core part of its business model.

For users concerned about privacy, there are controls available. Individuals can choose to disconnect specific applications from the personalization features or turn off personalized recommendations entirely through the Search Services Personalization settings. These options will allow users to manage their data and decide whether their information can be used for targeted advertising purposes.
