Nine people died when a private business jet crashed into a residential area in Palm Beach County, Florida, on Sunday. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed the deaths via a post on X, describing the incident as a "horrific tragedy." The crash occurred at 12:50 p.m. near a busy roadway, sending the aircraft into a nose dive that ended in a large fireball just feet from nearby homes.

The aircraft was a Learjet 60 with tail number N722BD. It departed from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas with a destination of the Bahamas. Jim Reynolds, a spokesperson for the Austin airport, identified the flight as a private operation but did not release names of the passengers or crew. He noted that the details regarding who was on board remained pending.

Federal agencies are coordinating the response to the accident. The Federal Aviation Administration is dispatching a team to assist the National Transportation Safety Board in determining the cause of the crash. Authorities had not announced a specific reason for the failure as of Sunday afternoon. The FAA also provided the flight path data that confirmed the route from Texas to the Bahamas.

The impact created a crater near the intersection of Military Trail and 10th Avenue North. Thick black smoke covered the site, and flames burned around chunks of pavement. Video footage recorded by motorists showed the jet plunging from the sky and striking the ground inches from passing vehicles. The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office closed roads in both directions to keep traffic away from the scene.

Emergency crews rushed to the location to manage the fire and secure the area. A woman working near the crash site reported that electricity in the immediate vicinity had been cut off for approximately two hours following the impact. It was not immediately clear if the crash caused structural damage to the nearby houses or if anyone on the ground was injured or killed.

The crash disrupted local traffic and utilities in the South Florida neighborhood. Firefighters and other emergency personnel remained on site as the investigation began. The NTSB and FAA teams are expected to examine the wreckage to reconstruct the sequence of events leading to the crash.
