Two senior student-athletes at the Hackley School in Tarrytown are completing the academic year with strong academic records while competing in three varsity sports each. The River Journal has named Emma Curran and Charlie Napach as its Scholar Athletes of the Month.
Curran, a triathlete since age seven, competes for the school in cross country, swimming, and track and field. She recently ran the 2.5-mile course at the Manhattan University Cross Country Invitational at Van Cortlandt Park in 2:11.17. That time earned her a medal and improved her personal best by 18 seconds. Curran serves as team captain alongside Caitlin Morrow. Her weighted grade-point average is estimated at 4.15. She has committed to play track and field at Cornell University.
Coach Dawn Crainer described Curran as a top-notch leader who motivates teammates during practice. Crainer noted that Curran often supports runners on difficult terrain, manages team supplies, and organizes merchandise. Curran said that competing in three team sports teaches athletes that they can accomplish difficult tasks. She also plans to participate in age-group nationals in Germany.
Charlie Napach competes in soccer, squash, and lacrosse. He maintains a grade-point average of 3.9 and is interested in history. Napach said he enjoys playing three different sports because it allows him to connect with new people each season. He acknowledged that athletes who specialize in one sport may have a competitive advantage. However, he values the camaraderie and team connection found in multiple sports.
Noah Knopf, Napach’s soccer coach, stated that Napach leads by example. Knopf said teammates can rely on Napach for consistent effort and commitment. Napach intends to play club sports in college and is currently considering schools in the Northeast.
