Mike Boynton has signed a two-year contract to become the head coach of the Michigan men's basketball team.
The hiring follows the departure of Dusty May, who left the Wolverines after the national championship season to join the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA. Michigan initially appointed Boynton as interim head coach before formalizing the permanent arrangement. The new head coach spent the last two seasons as an assistant on May's staff. Before joining Michigan, Boynton served as the head coach at Oklahoma State for seven seasons. During that time, his teams compiled an 119-109 overall record and secured one NCAA Tournament berth. He was dismissed from that position after the 2023-24 season ended with a 12-20 record.
Boynton described his time working alongside May as a learning experience during Big Ten media days. He stated that the past two years felt like a sabbatical while he observed how May managed the program. "I’m sitting next to this genius every day learning how to run a high-functioning corporation," Boynton said. He added that he learned how to identify specific qualities in players and how to delegate responsibilities effectively.
The transition at Michigan is part of a larger pattern of coaching changes in college basketball. Many programs have replaced their head coaches this offseason. Kansas State hired Casey Alexander after firing Jerome Tang. Tang had led the team to a regional final in his first year but posted a 45-47 record over the following three seasons. Alexander has a career record of 303-180 and previously coached at Stetson, Lipscomb, and Belmont.
LSU welcomed Will Wade back to the program for a second stint. The school had fired him in 2022 after the NCAA cited him for recruiting violations. His successor, Matt McMahon, was let go after four seasons with a 60-70 record. Wade had led McNeese and N.C. State to NCAA Tournament appearances while away from LSU. His first tenure at LSU resulted in a 105-51 record and three tournament bids in six years.
North Carolina made a distinct choice by hiring Michael Malone, who had no prior connection to the program and no previous experience as a college head coach. Malone is known for his time in the NBA, where he posted a 510-394 record from 2013 to 2025. He won a championship with the Denver Nuggets in 2023. He replaces Hubert Davis, who guided the Tar Heels to the 2022 NCAA championship game in five seasons.
N.C. State has named Justin Gainey as its new head coach. Gainey was a former captain of the Wolfpack and most recently served on the Tennessee staff under Rick Barnes. He also held assistant roles at Marquette, Arizona, Appalachian State, and Elon. Syracuse has hired Gerry McNamara, who holds the school's career records for three-point baskets and minutes played. McNamara returns to his alma mater after leading Siena to a 23-12 record and an NCAA appearance last season.
Several women's programs have also undergone leadership changes. Alabama hired Pauline Love, who had worked as an assistant there during the 2024-25 season. She previously served as an assistant at Oklahoma. Northwestern named Carla Berube, who reached the NCAA Tournament in each of her last five seasons at Princeton. Virginia has appointed Aaron Rousell, who led Richmond to three consecutive NCAA Tournament berths in seven seasons.
