The rivalry between Barcelona and Real Madrid has spanned 124 years, with the two clubs tied at 106 victories each in their historical meetings. Barcelona hosts Real Madrid this Sunday in a fixture that will determine which side holds the all-time lead in the competition known as El Clasico.

The first meeting between the two clubs took place in 1902. Over more than a century, the contest has featured numerous prominent players, including Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, as well as Zinedine Zidane and David Beckham. In recent seasons, attention has focused on Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal and Raphinha, alongside Real’s Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham, and Vinicius Jr.

Past matches have produced decisive outcomes that influenced league standings. On April 23, 2017, Barcelona defeated Real 3-2 at the Santiago Bernabeu. Messi scored his 500th career goal for the club in the final minute of that game, which Real captain Sergio Ramos saw end when he was sent off for a two-footed lunge on the Argentine.

In 2009, Barcelona won 6-2 at the Bernabeu, a result that helped secure their league title by nine points that season. Thierry Henry scored twice in that match, while Messi, Carles Puyol, and Gerard Pique also found the net. A year earlier, in 2007, Messi scored a hat-trick in a 3-3 draw at Camp Nou, earning a point for a Barcelona side playing with 10 men after a red card.

Real Madrid has also claimed notable victories in this rivalry. On April 10, 2005, they beat Barcelona 4-2 at home, with goals from Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo Nazario, Raul, and Michael Owen. In the Copa del Rey final on April 20, 2011, Real won 1-0 in extra time, with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring the decisive header from an Angel Di Maria pass.

Sunday’s match continues a long-standing pattern of high-stakes encounters between the two Spanish powerhouses. The result will update the all-time record, potentially ending a 124-year deadlock in wins and losses between the teams.
