Arsenal and Manchester City share the top spot in the Premier League with 21 points each after eight matches.
The equality was established on Saturday following two separate matches. Arsenal defeated Everton 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium in heavy rain. On the same day, Manchester City lost 2-1 at Aston Villa. That result marked the first defeat for City this season and erased the three-point gap that previously separated the leaders.
Arsenal's victory relied on set pieces. Martin Odegaard delivered a corner that Jordan Pickford saved, but Ezri Konsa finished the rebound from close range in the seventh minute. This was Konsa's first goal for the club and Arsenal's first set-piece goal since May. In the 68th minute, Ben White crossed from his 200th club appearance, and Gabriel headed the ball in during his 200th Premier League match. Everton finished the match in ninth place.
At Villa Park, Nicolas Jackson scored twice to secure the win for Unai Emery's side. Jackson opened the scoring in the sixth minute after a turnover by John McGinn. Erling Haaland equalized for City shortly after halftime with a header from Iliman Ndiaye's free kick. Jackson restored the lead in the 60th minute with a finish that went under Gianluigi Donnarumma. The win lifted Villa to sixth place with 11 points and marked their third consecutive league victory against City.
The league table is now tight, but external factors complicate the race for Manchester City. The club is appealing a decision by an independent commission that found 114 breaches of Premier League financial rules. City has denied wrongdoing while focusing on match performance. Jackson noted that the team is working game by game as they navigate this period.
Other results on the day affected the mid-table. Tottenham Hotspur defeated Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge. This was Spurs' second league win at that venue in 36 years. Mathys Tel scored the final goal in the 87th minute after Cole Palmer was sent off. Fulham beat Coventry City 1-0 thanks to a late strike by Oscar Bobb, moving Fulham to 13th place.
