Aaron Danks will take the tactical helm for Bayern Munich in Sunday's Bundesliga match against Freiburg. The English assistant coach steps into the role after head coach Vincent Kompany collapsed on the training pitch on Friday and was subsequently hospitalized.
Bayern's Director of Sport, Max Eberl, addressed reporters on Saturday to confirm Kompany's status. Eberl stated that the 40-year-old remains in the hospital in stable condition while medical staff continue to examine the specific nature of the virus affecting him. He emphasized that the club has not established a recovery timeframe.
Eberl noted that the club intends to give Kompany all the time he requires before discussing his return. He indicated that the absence will likely span several weeks rather than days. The director added that the team's primary focus is understanding the medical issue before making any strategic plans for the coach's reintegration.
Danks, who led the news conference in Kompany's absence, said he spoke briefly with the former Belgium captain on Friday. The conversation focused solely on Kompany's health, with Danks noting that no football topics were discussed. He stated that the coaching staff now handles all operational decisions to ensure the club continues to function effectively.
The club decided not to request a postponement for the upcoming fixture at Freiburg. Eberl explained that a strong performance and a positive result would serve as the best way to support Kompany's recovery. He described a good showing on the pitch as a potential aid for the coach's health.
Danks also announced that Germany captain Joshua Kimmich will miss the Freiburg match. Kimmich has been on bereavement leave since Tuesday. This absence adds to the changes the team faces as it prepares to travel to Freiburg.
Kompany had returned to the dugout for Wednesday's home match against Arsenal despite suffering from the virus. He acknowledged afterward that he had ignored early warning signs of his illness. The defending Bundesliga champions currently lead the table by one point over Freiburg and will play their next Champions League match in Madrid on November 3.
