Kylian Mbappe enters Monday's Ballon d'Or ceremony in London holding the all-time record for goals in World Cup history, a statistical lead he believes outweighs the absence of a team trophy this season. The 2025-26 campaign, which determines the winner, ended without a single silverware win for the French forward at either the club or international level.

Mbappe's strongest statistical argument comes from the 2026 World Cup in North America. He scored 22 goals in 22 matches to claim the Golden Boot for the second consecutive tournament. This total moves him past Lionel Messi, who holds 21 career World Cup goals, and Miroslav Klose, who has 16. Mbappe stated that overtaking previous legends in the tournament's history is a distinct achievement that sets his season apart.

His domestic performance supports his individual case. The former Paris Saint-Germain forward finished as the top scorer in La Liga with 25 goals. He also led the scoring charts in the Champions League with 15 goals. Mbappe noted that finishing as the top scorer in these major competitions suggests a strong year for his candidacy.

The primary weakness in his bid is the lack of team success. Real Madrid finished second in La Liga and were eliminated by Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinals. This result extends their drought without a major trophy to a second consecutive season. France also underperformed at the World Cup, finishing fourth after losses to Spain in the semifinals and England in the third-place playoff.

Other contenders possess more hardware. Lamine Yamal won the World Cup with Spain and the league title with Barcelona. Harry Kane won three trophies with Bayern Munich, including the Bundesliga. These team victories align with the historical trend of the award, as every winner over the past decade lifted at least one major trophy during their award year.

Mbappe remains focused on individual recognition. He told radio station RFI that the award honors a player, not a team, and that eye-catching individual moments are what voters prioritize. Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho also voiced support, stating that Mbappe is the player who made history this summer, distinct from his former clubs or national team.

Precedent suggests Mbappe has a slim chance. Cristiano Ronaldo won the Ballon d'Or in 2013 without a major trophy, having finished as runner-up in La Liga and failing to advance past the World Cup playoffs. Ronaldo scored 66 goals that season. Mbappe has been nominated nine times and placed third in 2023, marking another attempt to claim the honor.
