Eight people lost their lives and forty more sustained injuries when gunmen opened fire at a place of worship in the Karak governorate. The royal court confirmed that King Abdullah has directed security agencies to pursue the perpetrators with an aggressive and unwavering posture. This violent incident has triggered a nationwide review of protective measures at key public locations.
The shooting occurred on Friday in broad daylight. The targets were gathered for a funeral service at a Greek Orthodox church situated roughly 120 kilometers southwest of the capital, Amman. Gunmen discharged their weapons for several minutes before withdrawing. Officials quickly labeled the incident an act of extremist terrorism, though no faction has yet stepped forward to claim ownership of the operation.
In the immediate aftermath, the nation entered a three-day period of mourning as declared by the state-run Petra News Agency. Prime Minister Jafar Hassan utilized the social platform X to characterize the event as a manifestation of blind extremism. He stated that the society would not be allowed to follow this ideological path. The Prime Minister emphasized the need to combat the specific mindset that fueled the violence.
King Abdullah traveled to the site within hours of the initial reports. During his visit, he pledged that those responsible would be dealt with using an iron fist. The monarch’s presence underscored the gravity of the event for the leadership. His role as a US partner in regional counter-terrorism efforts adds a layer of strategic importance to the domestic response.
Witnesses provided harrowing details of the chaos. Nasser al-Burqan, a lawyer who survived the exchange, told Reuters that a shooter stood roughly two meters away and aimed a handgun directly at him. He later learned from his son that the young man had been shot in the leg and was receiving medical care. Al-Burqan noted that after the gunfire stopped, he spotted two assailants through a window, one wearing a mask and the other holding a pistol.
At the local hospital, Tarek Ammarin, whose relative was among the injured, described the scene as a massacre in every sense of the word. Bahjat al-Rushda, the mayor of the nearby Shihan village, condemned the wicked nature of the strike. He expressed hope that the country would remain secure under divine will. These remarks reflect the deep emotional impact on the local community.
Such violent incidents are uncommon in this US-allied kingdom. However, authorities have noted that they have repeatedly thwarted plots by groups driven by a strict interpretation of Islam in recent years. The Karak region hosts a small Christian minority and contains several biblical locations that attract pilgrims from across the globe, making it a sensitive target for observers.
