A 36-year-old British woman has died in the Bahamas after attempting to save her two sons from a powerful ocean current, according to a statement released by local police officials. The incident occurred on the island of Bimini, where authorities have opened a formal investigation into the sudden death of the visitor from Stapleford in Nottinghamshire.

The Royal Bahamas Police Force reported that the family was snorkelling near the southern point of the island when the event unfolded. While the husband and wife were in the water with their two sons, a strong current unexpectedly swept both children away. The mother immediately moved to reach them but was also carried off by the water. The two boys were subsequently rescued and removed from the sea, but their mother required further assistance to be brought back to shore.

According to the police account, officers at the Alice Town station received a call shortly after 10am that morning. They were informed that a woman was unresponsive at the North Bimini Ferry Dock. Responding officers arrived at the scene and learned that she had already been transported to a local clinic for urgent medical care. A doctor at the facility pronounced her dead after efforts to revive her proved unsuccessful.

The force clarified that the woman was pulled from the water and brought to the ferry dock, where bystanders or responders administered CPR. This initial resuscitation effort was part of the chain of events leading to her arrival at the medical facility. The police noted that the family had been enjoying a recreational activity when the dangerous conditions took hold, highlighting the risks associated with the local marine environment during that time.

In its preliminary findings, the Royal Bahamas Police Force stated that foul play is not suspected in the case. An autopsy has been scheduled to provide a definitive explanation for the exact cause of death. This procedural step is standard in such investigations to ensure all medical and environmental factors are properly documented and understood by the families involved.

The United Kingdom's Foreign Office has confirmed its awareness of the tragedy. A spokesperson expressed their condolences to the family of the deceased British citizen. Officials stated that they are maintaining contact with local Bahamian authorities to coordinate the necessary administrative and logistical support for the family during this difficult period.

The death marks a significant event for the community and the families involved, as the investigation continues to gather all relevant details. The focus remains on supporting the bereaved family while the official process moves forward to close the case. The local police force continues to monitor the situation and will provide further updates as new information becomes available from the medical examination.
