Residents in western Hebron have faced immediate changes to their daily routines as Israeli forces removed illegal structures and temporarily evacuated specific neighborhoods. This action follows a violent incident that killed two soldiers earlier in the week. The military is now conducting a wide search for weapons and hidden infrastructure in the area.
The demolitions took place on Saturday near the northern entrance to Hebron. Troops and Civil Administration staff targeted buildings constructed without proper authorization. These actions were part of a larger military operation that began after the shooting attack on Friday. The goal is to enforce law and order while removing potential security risks posed by these structures.
The attack occurred at Yehuda Junction on Friday. It resulted in the deaths of St.-Sgt. Ron Yonatan Roytman and Sgt. Yuval Shai Svilem. The military identified the gunmen as Hamouda and Firas al-Ja'aba. Both men are affiliated with Hamas and came from the Ein Dir-Baha neighborhood. The broader campaign is led by the Judea Brigade.
Multiple units are involved in this counterterrorism effort. Forces include troops from the Duvdevan and Maglan units, the Paratroopers Brigade, and Givati reconnaissance reservists. The Border Police are also participating. The Shin Bet security agency provides intelligence guidance for the operation. So far, soldiers have searched about 200 locations.
During these searches, authorities confirmed that no weapons or active terrorist presence remained in those spots. They arrested ten suspects. IDF assessments indicate that about 2,000 residents in the area belong to the Ja'aba clan. This clan is linked to Hamas. Officials state that the area is a known center for Hamas activity in Hebron.
Evacuations began on Friday evening in the al-Jalda and Ein Dir-Baha neighborhoods. These are densely populated districts within Hebron's Palestinian urban area. Civilians who wanted to leave were allowed to exit through checkpoints run by the Shin Bet and the IDF. Officials say removing residents helps ensure safety while troops search homes and surroundings for explosives and weapons caches.
A situational assessment will take place on Saturday to decide if the operation should grow. Meanwhile, Brig.-Gen. Kobi Heller has widened searches and arrests in Nablus, Jenin, and Tulkarm. Additional locations in Samaria are also under scrutiny. These expanded moves come as Hamas leadership abroad tries to plan attacks before upcoming elections.
