Elena Rybakina is attempting to hold onto her Ningbo Open title after overcoming a challenging semifinal match. The world number one defeated Russian sixth seed Diana Shnaider with a score of 6-3, 7-5 at the Yinzhou International Tennis Centre.

Rybakina controls the opening set through aggressive play from deep in the court, though she faces difficulties closing out the game. She requires eleven set points to secure the first set, noting the struggle in handling her serve. "It was an important game, and it was a long one," Rybakina said. "I was playing the first balls really well, but I couldn't close the game .. so many opportunities, but I'm glad it went my way."

The second set mirrors the first in difficulty for the 27-year-old. Rybakina breaks serve to lead 4-3 but concedes the 10th game to love. She regains the lead in the following game with powerful shots and serves with greater confidence to finish the match. Shnaider's left-handed style creates specific tactical challenges for Rybakina, who cites the difficulty of switching patterns during rallies.

Rybakina arrives at this stage after a turbulent month. She suffered a heavy defeat in Beijing and withdrew from Wuhan due to a foot injury. Her performance against the 13th-ranked Shnaider shows flashes of her best tennis, despite the wobbles in both sets.

Her opponent in the Sunday final is unseeded Canadian Leylah Fernandez. Fernandez secured her place by defeating Czech player Marie Bouzkova using the same 6-3, 7-5 scoreline in the first semifinal. Like Shnaider, Fernandez is left-handed, presenting a similar technical test for the defending champion.

Rybakina approaches the title defense with measured expectations. She acknowledges that winning consecutive trophies at this event is rarely straightforward. "It's never easy," she said. "Of course I'll try to do my best. I'm going to fight and give my all tomorrow."

Following the Ningbo final, Rybakina will compete in the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo next week. She will then begin her defense of the WTA Finals title at Indian Wells, scheduled to start on November 8.
