Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy was hospitalized on Saturday, Oct. 31, after suffering a stroke during a family event. The 53-year-old Democrat felt numbness in his arm while watching his son play hockey. He was transported to a local facility for immediate care. Medical staff confirmed the diagnosis of a stroke.

Murphy’s chief of staff, Allison Herwitt, provided details in a statement released on Sunday, Nov. 1. She noted that doctors moved the senator to Johns Hopkins Hospital for additional monitoring. Herwitt said Murphy is currently awake and alert. Medical professionals describe his response to treatment as positive. The team is optimistic about a full recovery.

The statement did not name the first hospital where Murphy received initial care. It also did not provide a specific date for his return to legislative duties. Murphy’s medical team is encouraging his progress based on current observations.

The incident occurred during a period of intense travel for the midterm elections. Politico reported that Murphy had recently visited Michigan, Minnesota, and Florida. He had planned to attend campaign events in New Hampshire on Sunday. His hospitalization effectively paused that schedule.

Murphy is a three-time elected senator from Connecticut. He first won a seat in 2012. He secured reelection in 2018 and again in 2024. His current term extends through January 2031. Before the Senate, he served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2007 to 2013. He also held positions in the Connecticut General Assembly.

Born in White Plains, New York, Murphy grew up in Wethersfield, Connecticut. He graduated from Wethersfield High School. He studied at Williams College in Massachusetts, earning his undergraduate degree in 1996. He received his law degree from the University of Connecticut in 2002. Murphy has been a vocal supporter of gun violence reduction legislation since the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in 2012.
