Bloomington police detained a man carrying a firearm early Sunday morning after gunfire broke out near Indiana University. The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. on November 1 in the 400 block of East Kirkwood Avenue. Seven people were transported to area hospitals with injuries.

The shooting took place about two blocks west of the university campus. It happened near the intersection of Grant Street and Kirkwood Avenue. A large crowd had gathered in the area hours after the football game. City and university police officers were already monitoring the group when the gunfire started.

Deputy Police Chief Ryan Pedigo said officers heard multiple gunshots. Preliminary information suggests a disturbance in the crowd happened before the shooting. Officers saw a man with a gun running northeast from the scene. They pursued him and took him into custody east of Indiana Avenue near Dunn Meadow.

Police found a gun near where they detained the man. Pedigo stated that investigators had not yet determined if the detained man fired any shots. They recovered numerous shell casings of different calibers from the sidewalk near 420 E. Kirkwood Ave. The number of people who fired weapons remained unclear.

The seven confirmed victims are four males and three females. Their ages range from 17 to 27. No deaths had been reported at the time of the update. Investigators were checking for additional people who may have been injured but had not yet reported their wounds.

The incident followed a homecoming football game on Saturday, October 31. The No. 4 ranked Indiana Hoosiers defeated Minnesota 23-16 in overtime. Authorities had not established a connection between the game and the disturbance.

Detective Chris Scott is leading the investigation. He is asking anyone with information or video footage to contact him at 812-339-4477. He can also be reached via email at cscott@bloomington.in.gov.
